Recall prior knowledge What were three major world events that occurred in the 1950's? What was happening in this country in the 1950's? Can you think of an artist who uses 3-D objects in his or her paintings?
Introduction to combines and assemblages Read the information found on the provided links (below) and see if you can determine the difference between a combine and an assemblage.Wikipedia page on combines: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combine_paintingModern Museum of Art on assemblages: http://www.moma.org/collection/theme.php?theme_id=10057
Introduction to Robert Rauschenberg
Rauschenberg is one of my favorite artists. His works challenged the viewer to reconsider the differences between 2-D design and 3-D sculpture. He didn't let preconceptions of art limit his use of materials or techniques. Ignoring traditional art styles, Rauschenberg created a new type of art: combines.Click here to see a collection of his combines and assemblages.

Tabletop resin We will do all of this in class where I can make sure we observe all necessary safety precautions. Epoxy resin is the "liquid glass" that coats tables and permanently embeds found objects or papers. The procedure involves safely combining equal parts of resin and hardener into a 3rd container, slowly stirring together, and pouring evenly over a flat surface. Once the chemical reaction takes place and resin sets, the surface is water proof.Using coating agents such as this helps to unite the various materials. It is not necessary for all objects to be completely covered, however.
